Medical marijuana is legal in 37 states, four territories and the District of Columbia, but it isn’t covered by Medicare, the federal health insurance program for older Americans. Possession of marijuana remains illegal under federal law.

A survey of 1,250 Medicare recipients was conducted in April and discovered that one in five utilize medical marijuana and 23 percent have previously done so. In all, 21% said they used it to cure one or more medical issues.

The most common reason for current health use (32%) was due to a medical condition, followed by previous recreational marijuana usage (38%). Overall, 26% of recreational users reported having previously used medicinal marijuana.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that roughly one-quarter of the respondents use marijuana to manage anxiety and chronic pain. Approximately one-fifth said they utilize it to alleviate depression, glaucoma, and

A majority of respondents support the idea of Medicare covering medical marijuana.

Medicare coverage is supported by over six in ten supporters (61 percent) because medical marijuana may be effective in the treatment of certain illnesses when other treatments fail.

Why are people hesitant to use this product?
Four in 10 Americans (38%) are concerned that Medicare coverage would raise the cost of their drugs.

According to a poll, current customers’ out-of-pocket expenses were diverse. Sixty percent said they spent up to $200 per month; 36% spent between $201 and $500 per month; and 14% more than $500 each month.

In all, 31% of those who do not want Medicare to cover medical marijuana listed unknown long-term consequences and a lack of study into its potential applications and efficacy as their main concerns.

Over half of respondents indicated that they would want Medicare to cover medical marijuana because it is a multi-purpose therapy.

The leading reason (48 percent) for users who have previously relied on Medicare coverage is that marijuana is a natural cure rather than a manufactured pharmaceutical.

The survey also found differences based on political beliefs, with 71% of Democrats; 65% of Republicans; and 63% of independents, third-party members, and apolitical seniors saying they “agree” or “strongly agree” that Medicare should cover medical marijuana.
