The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a crucial time for Medicare beneficiaries to review and make changes to their coverage for the upcoming year. The AEP runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, and during this time, beneficiaries can make changes to their Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans.
During the AEP, beneficiaries can switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan or vice versa. They can also change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, or switch from one Part D prescription drug plan to another.
It’s important to note that any changes made during the AEP will take effect on January 1 of the following year. This means that if you make a change during the AEP, your new coverage will start on January 1, and you’ll be stuck with that coverage for the entire year unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
Another enrollment period to be aware of is the General Enrollment Period (GEP). The GEP runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. During this time, people who did not enroll in Medicare when they were first eligible can sign up for coverage. However, if you enroll during the GEP, your coverage will not start until July 1 of the same year.
Overall, the Annual Enrollment Period and General Enrollment Period are important times for Medicare beneficiaries to review and make changes to their coverage. It’s essential to take advantage of these periods to ensure that you have the best coverage for your needs and budget.
